Since art is, by definition, a subjective and personal experience--completely unique to the individual--it is the journey of personal visual expression and the process of creating that is most interesting to me. Using the purity of paint, color and form to express the landscape around me is key to my work. Rather than paint what I see, I work from memory in order to capture the dynamic of the landscape or cityscape. This “abstracting” of experience will suddenly liberate the painting (and me)--transforming it from a typical subject matter into something altogether different from its origins and sense of place. It is this journey of discovering these abstract landscapes--not their end result (for there really is no finality to where these pieces will take me)--that I find most enjoyable, enlightening and vital to my process of painting.
